Membership

Any registered, practicing Medical Practitioner is eligible for Division GP Membership.  Members are those GPs who have completed a membership application form.

There are 254 eligible General Practitioners of whom 206 (75%) are members.  There are an additional 3 members who practice outside the Divisions catchment area.

GP Statistics

There are 52 females and 154 male GP members within the Division.  There are 58 practices within the catchment area, and the majority of GPs work in practices with 5 or more GPs (68%).  22% of GPs work in practices with 2-4 GPs and 10% work in solo practices.

Whilst GPs are distributed broadly across the catchment area, practices in all areas report issues related to GP workforce.  The largest number of GPs can be found at Prospect, Greenacres, Modbury North and Ingle Farm, however all practices in these areas report difficulties filling GP vacancies and/or have closed their books to new patients.  Greenacres and Modbury North are amongst the more densely populated suburbs within the Division.  The ratio of GPs:patients across the whole Division, is 1:1351 (PHCRIS 2007).

The number of GPs who speak Chinese is considerably higher than any other language (10.2%).  This is followed by Italian (6.9%), Hindi (3.6%) and Greek (3.2%).  A comparison of the languages that the population speaks at home with the languages spoken by GPs has identified that there are no GPs who speak Maltese, Macedonian, Portuguese, Serbian or Filipino.

Associate Membership

At our Annual General Meeting held on 26 October 2007 we were delighted to announce a "new" category of Division membership.

Associate Members are those people working in a general practice within the Division's boundaries.  Practice Managers, Practice Nurses and Administration Staff may apply.

The Associate Member - Health Professionals sub-category refers to people either working within a general practice located in the Division region and/or working with (for example, receiving referrals) a general practice.  They may also be working within a Residential Aged Care Facility.  This may involve people such as Pharmacists, Mental Health Pracitioners, Allied Health Practitioners (Podiatrists, Physiotherapists, etc.) and the Director of Nursing of an Aged Care Facility.  Please see the application form or contact us for more information.
