·         Representing you in getting what is required at a local level. There is strength in our local practices acting as one voice.

·         Access to services for patients We all acknowledge there are problems in accessing services. Your Division currently delivers nation leading mental health services, and has pushed the local health region to improve diabetes care services and is constantly working in aged care to improve access to services for older people both in the community and in residential aged care.

·         Member related services -in 2008 we are looking to partner organisations in order to give preferred provider discounts or special offers to our valued members. Examples are Argus secure messaging installations, IT support and much more.  Access to the Practice Health Atlas, a vitally important business building tool for GPs will also be a feature in 2008.

Community Awareness for Palliative Care

As part of National Palliative Care Week (25-31 May) the Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) is encouraging Australians to learn more about Palliative Care and the clinical and support services avaliable for people who are living with a termainal illness.

AGPN Chair Tony Hobbs said each year over half a million Australians receive Palliative Care.

"Being diagnosed or having someone close to you diagnosed with a terminal illness is a very challenging time for everyone involved. Appropriate support services are important to help reduce the stress and improve quality of life for the person living with a terminal illness and their family.

"Palliative Care involves a team-based coordination approach which includes GPs, nurses, allied health professionals, family, friends, pastoral carers and strong linkages to Palliative Care specialists. All play a very important part in caring for the physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs of the patient in the final chapter of their life," Dr Hobbs said.

AGPN has a strong commitment to Palliative Care and has recently commenced implementing the Rural Palliative Care Project 2008-2010. This project will enable 36 Divisions of general practice in rural and remote areas to work with health and community services to deliver Palliative Care in their local areas.

AGPN CEO Kate Carnell said that the community should take the time to become familiar with the options available for Palliative Care.

"During National Palliative Care Week, Palliative Care Australia and the Knowledge Network re-launched the categories for patients, for carers and families and for Palliative Care professionals (www.caresearch.com.au)

"I encourage all Australians to visit this site to ensure that if faced with their own or a loved ones terminal illness they are able to access holistic care that focuses on quality of life." Ms Carnell said.
